Wimbledon Adopts Video Replay System in 2025.

Wimbledon court with replay system

The tournament joins the US and Aussie Opens in implementing replay technology.

Replay systems are set to arrive at The Championships for the 2025 edition.

Players are granted the right to challenge certain decisions made by the chair umpire, mirroring the system currently in place at each of the US Open and the Australian Open.

This technology will be accessible on Centre Court and the number one court throughout the Championships and on the remaining featured courts when they are hosting singles matches.

This step follows just a year after the All England Club rolled out ELC, which terminated the 147-year tradition of line officials.

What Can Be Reviewed?

Players cannot to dispute the call of the ELC system, but are allowed to ask for the official to re-examine specific situations, such as:

  • Whether a tennis ball has bounced twice.
  • If a ball made contact with an opponent's racquet or person on the way past.
  • Possible hindrance at the conclusion of a point.

Importantly, there will be no limit on the amount of reviews a competitor can initiate.

A Recent Example

A recent incident occurred in a recent tournament recently, where a top player used the video challenge against his opponent.

Draper admitted it was a difficult call for the official, but believed his opponent had "played the rules quite well."

Official Aurelie Tourte watched a replay and ruled Draper was guilty of interference, granting the rally to Medvedev.

Broader Adoption

Video reviews aren't new for Grand Slams. The system was adopted at the US Open since 2023 and the Aussie Open this year.

Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by next season the ATP circuit plans to have the system implemented at all of its events.

Other Changes

Another change at The Championships 2025 involves the addition of graphical cues on displays to support the verbal announcements from the electronic line calling system.

This addresses instances where fans have sometimes been uncertain whether a ball was in or out.

In other news, with precisely 100 days remaining until the start of the tournament, organizers have also announced an increase in daily capacity at the qualifiers in Roehampton.
