Individuals Stopping Weight-Loss Jabs Regain Pounds Far More Rapidly Than Those on Conventional Diets

Weight management involves ongoing approaches.

Fresh analysis suggests that individuals who come off blockbuster weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain shed pounds far faster than those who stop traditional diet and exercise regimens.

Published data in a prominent health publication shows that while overweight individuals often shed about a fifth of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the weight comes back at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.

"People buying such drugs should be cognizant of the potential of quick rebound weight gain when the treatment ends," cautioned researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of recovery implies a reversion to original mass within about a year and a half.

Comparing Approaches

The research, which reviewed 37 of studies involving thousands of patients, contrasted the results of the injectable medications with older methods.

Researchers emphasize that people who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone generally see a less rapid creep back—approximately 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.

The Reason for the Rapid Rebound

Experts suggest the way of the injections explains the accelerated weight return.

GLP-1 drugs copy a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which controls hunger.

"Artificially providing the hormone levels far above than normal may cause the body to produce less of its endogenous GLP-1, and could reduce responsiveness to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.

"Withdrawal of this GLP-1 'fix' leads to appetite is unsuppressed, making excessive eating much more probable."

A Lifelong Condition?

Health authorities recommend the jabs for people with weight-linked medical conditions, accompanied by recommended diet and exercise modifications.

A number of clinicians argue that, considering the high risk of weight regain, the treatment might need to be life-long.

This view is supported by drug manufacturers, who state that the results "underscore the persistent character of excess weight," akin to managing conditions like hypertension.

User Testimonies

People who have come off the jabs describe a sudden resurgence of cravings.

"It was like a trigger that goes on and you become ravenous," recalled one woman.

This difficulty is exacerbated if individuals have not established lasting lifestyle or habit modifications during treatment.

Growing Use

Survey data suggest that millions of people in the UK have used these injections in the last 12 months, with interest continuing to grow.

  • Use is greater among females compared to males.
  • The middle-aged demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
  • Many access the medications through private healthcare rather than public health services.

Finally, researchers caution that while these medications are effective tools for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent cure and lasting health benefits hinges on combined lifestyle changes.
