'Treat game'

The prosecutor, prosecuting, described Ruben's offending to the court.

She said his victims were disadvantaged youngsters who were attending a summer camp which he ran.

Ruben engaged in a "candy game" with the children, the legal counsel explained, in which he would enter the sleeping quarters when they were preparing to sleep and tell them to ingest treats "as quickly as they can".

She stated to the judge Ruben had engaged in this activity with the young males "repeatedly", and children had previously fallen ill the following morning.

She said the defendant had been able to explain this over a long period as the minors being "overwrought by enjoyment", until his stepchild had suspicions in summer 2025.

The prosecutor continued: "In the summer" his stepson had suspicions about the situation, justifiably.

"They chose" to examine in the defendant's belongings."

The prosecutor said items including lubricant, Vaseline and injection devices were discovered, and his stepson notified the authorities about his worries.

She said Ruben continued to play the "treat game" with six boys that evening - Saturday 26 July - and they were all sick the following morning.

"Authorities" had not responded by that time," she added.

The police watchdog, the Independent Office for Police Conduct, earlier informed that it was examining law enforcement's management of the events.

The legal representative said the children were struggling to walk due to their sickness, so Ruben's stepson notified the police again.

She stated the man then played the "candy game" in a room of five minors.
