The EU could “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it deems “unjustified” travel bans issued by the US on five European individuals working on fighting online hate and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.
EU Officials Decry US Move as ‘Intimidation’
European leaders including the French president charged Washington of “bullying and threats”, after the visa restrictions targeted figures who have been at the heart of campaigns to introduce laws regulating American tech companies.
“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to pressure US companies to suppress American viewpoints they disagree with,” wrote a senior US official in a social media post. “This government will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”
Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported the French president in condemning the move.
The bans were imposed this week on a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as four anti-disinformation campaigners, including two in Germany and two in the UK.
A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance
This European legislation is viewed by Washington as a type of speech restriction, whereas EU authorities contend the rules are essential to combat hate speech and falsehoods.
This disagreement risks becoming a facet of a far wider existing cultural and political conflict involving Washington and European institutions.
