Australia's captain Poised for a Major Role in the Ashes

Australian cricket captain

Pat Cummins has claimed 309 wickets in 71 Test matches with an impressive average.

Australia's chair of selectors the selector has stated that captain Pat Cummins will have a crucial role in the forthcoming England-Australia contest.

Speculation had been growing that Cummins might be unavailable due to a stress fracture in his back that had not yet healed.

Earlier indications from team management suggested no official announcement had been made regarding his involvement, with the extended contest scheduled to begin on the 21st of November in Western Australia.

Bailey expressed that the captain is progressing and felt positive about the prospects of being involved.

"We're aware that the window is narrowing and multiple considerations involved, aside from the physical problem, but further aspects," he commented.

"It's positive. [We are] really confident that he will feature a significant role. With luck from the opening match. If not, we'll adjust."

Injury History

The captain missed Australia's limited-overs series against both Asian and Trans-Tasman rivals recently after scans revealed a lower back issue.

Previous incidents include of back injuries, with flare-ups in several earlier campaigns forcing him out of several home seasons in a limited period.

He emphasized he would be ""aggressive" and "take risks" in his rehabilitation process to secure his spot for the series.

Bailey noted that he did not know if the captain had resumed bowling as part of his rehabilitation but conceded it was "becoming urgent" for him to recover fully for the first Test.

Alternative Arrangements

Should Cummins not be fit, former captain Steve Smith will assume leadership.

Versatile player Green was withdrawn recently from the ODI lineup for their ODI contests against the Asian giants as a safety move because of discomfort in his torso.

He labeled it as a "minor" injury and stated that Green will play in the Sheffield Shield, so will be "in a good place to resume bowling."

"Extensive planning has gone into building out the plan for him to take part for the initial game as an batting and bowling option," he elaborated.

"He was only going to play the first two ODIs anyway. His aggressive style the bat in limited-overs, even if it just sets him back for 24 more hours, the choice was made to adopt a safer strategy."
